Today’s post will show you the best practices when it comes to signing up and applying for promising internships and freshers jobs on Switch Idea.
If you are new to Switch Idea, then this post should be the first thing that you read before going ahead and applying on Switch Idea.
If you have already signed up on Switch Idea, you should read this post nonetheless so as to apply to openings in the best possible manner and thus improve your chances of standing out among the crowd and getting shortlisted.
So what is Switch Idea?
Switch Idea is a website which is dedicated to helping students and fresh graduates discover and apply to great professional opportunities. If you are looking to take a step into the professional world, this is the right place for you to start.
So without wasting much time, let me show you how you can get started.
Signing up / making an account on Switch Idea:
You can view all the openings on our website without signing in. However, to apply to any of these openings, you have to first create an account.
Click the Sign Up button on the top right hand corner (desktop or mobile)
You will be given an option to sign up as a student or an employer.
Choose ‘Student’ and you will see the Facebook Login option.
Click on the Facebook login button and give Switch Idea access to your Facebook data. (We will not post anything to Facebook. Promise!)
The reason we are using Facebook for login is because we value efficiency and the security of all our users. Facebook login makes the entire process of signing up and signing in seamless.
After your Facebook account has been authenticated, you will be taken to a page where you will have to fill in your profile information.
The first thing you will notice is that your Facebook Display Pic has automatically loaded on your profile. You can change this later but please make sure that your display pic shows your face properly. Apparently, more people get hired if they smile in their display pics 🙂
Next you will see the profile information fields. Make sure that you fill in all the fields with the correct information. Companies will have access to this information and they prefer a completed profile.
After you have filled in the profile information, the last step is to upload your Resume. You can click on the Upload Resume button and select your Resume from your hard drive. Once this is done, the resume will be uploaded and you will see this.
Make sure that your resume has correct information and that you name it properly.
Correct naming: DenzilLewis.pdf or DenzilLewisResume.pdf
Incorrect naming: Document.pdf, Resume.doc, Document1.pdf
After you have uploaded your resume successfully, you can click the green ‘Save All Changes’ button below.
If you have followed this guide correctly, you will see this message on the top of your page.
Awesome! Now you are ready to search and apply to all the openings on our platform.
Searching for openings:
Once you have finished your profile setup, you can go to the homepage and start searching for the openings that you want.
You will see this ‘Filter Bar’ on the homepage.
This helps you to search for the right openings with parameter such as Job Type, Location and Industry. Finding the right opportunities becomes super simple if you are using the filter.
Alternatively, you can type your query into the search box on the top right hand corner of the page. You will get results which you can filter accurately by using the Filter Bar.
Applying to openings:
So now you have found a job that has sparked your interest! The first thing you should do is to click on this job and get more details about it.
Reading the job description is important because you can then decide if you are the right candidate for the job.
On the left hand side corner, you will a section which gives you details such as Company Logo, Skills Required, Job Type, Job Views and an option to Recommend this Job on Facebook. There is an apply button here but you should read more about the job before replying, so don’t hurry yet!
The right hand side of the page has information such as Job Title, Company name, Location, Job Category, Compensation and the last date to apply.
Next comes the most important part of the job page – Job Description and Responsibilities.
Make sure you read this section thoroughly because it is very important. This section gives you a fair idea of what the company is looking for in a candidate. Apply only to those jobs for which you are eligible in terms of skills and requirements.
Below this section, you will see the Apply Button. Clicking on it will bring up a section where you have to write your cover letter. Please understand that this is the most crucial aspect of applying to a job, much more important than your resume. This cover letter will be read before they go to your resume. It is important that your cover letter be professional and well communicated. No grammar errors, typos or one line cover letters please! Companies will never get in touch with you if you make these mistakes. Pay a lot of attention when you write a cover letter and check it again before clicking the Apply button.
Note: Every job requires a different cover letter. Please do not copy paste the same thing on every application.
Submit your application and that’s it! You have successfully applied the opening. You can now relax.
Important Note: Do not apply to random jobs. If an employer complains about random applications, we will be forced to give you a warning. If this repeats again, we will be forced to terminate your account.
Below the Apply button you will find a section called ‘Related Openings’. Our system intelligently puts together a list of openings similar to the ones that you just applied. You can check them out and apply to the ones that you are interested in.
Checking your applications:
If you want to check your submitted applications, then you can go to Applications in the top right hand corner of the website. This will show you all the openings that you have applied for.
If a company shortlists you for a position, they will get in touch with you directly. You may get an email or a phone call informing you about it. An interview date will be fixed and you can then take it from there.
Just Got Hired:
If you crack the interview then you should tell us the good news. You can click on the ‘Just Got Hired’ button on the top right hand corner of our website and tell us all about it. We will send you a surprise 🙂
